Efficient Passpack Configuration with Google, Microsoft Directory Integration

Passpack offers directory integration for users of Google and Microsoft identity and access management (IAM) services, with support for Okta coming soon. This integration synchronizes the users and teams from the directory into Passpack.

Who Needs Directory Integration

Larger organizations must efficiently and effectively onboard and offboard large populations of employees to keep pace with growth, turnover, and ever-changing access privileges. Directory integration dramatically improves how IT administrators add and remove users in a hierarchical environment, making it far easier to create a Team sharing structure based on the well-proven directory structure from Google and Microsoft.

Key Features and Benefits

Passpack directory integration saves administrator time and effort, eliminates manual errors, and standardizes IAM workflows. It improves IT staff productivity while offering a seamless experience for users accessing resources across an organization's domains and platforms. Here’s how:

  • Automated Provisioning/Deprovisioning: This feature automates the creation, modification, and removal of user identities through the Passpack application, preventing unauthorized access and freeing IT staff for more strategic work. Provisioning can be applied to individual users or multi-user groups. When an employee joins an organization, a new identity can be created in Passpack for applications integrated with multiple directories, giving them instant access to all resources. When they leave, administrators can disable access to all resources with one click to offboard users with total confidence.
  • Improved Security: By automating identity management and organizing users into teams by role hierarchy or location, Passpack directory integration reduces the risk of human error, such as accidentally granting resource access to an unauthorized user. Further, Passpack applies AES 256-bit end-to-end encryption to protect all passwords and data stored in the application from being exposed in transit and at rest.
  • Simplified Management: Directory integration streamlines user lifecycle management, making it easier for IT administrators to manage employees as they come and go, and ensuring each has the appropriate permissions to access information in the Passpack environment. Passpack supports unlimited Teams, so admins can apply various rules to all users in a group with a single action. Another key benefit of Passpack directory integration is adding or removing individuals from Passpack Teams as their roles or responsibilities change without affecting other team members.
  • Reduced Manual Effort: Admins can import and export new user identities en masse and affect changes to user profiles and permissions in all applications and systems simultaneously, rather than endure the tedious process of updating identities manually in every directory. If an employee changes their name, for example, it will update the change across all systems using that information. No errors or omissions.
  • Enhanced Compliance: In conjunction with Passpack, directory integration helps enterprises comply with industry regulations such as HIPAA, GDPR, and NIST by promoting secure recordkeeping practices and encrypting all passwords and shared notes.

Go All In with Passpack Directory Integration

Directory integration is critical to IAM because it gives enterprises the scalability and agility they need to grow. Automated user provisioning/deprovisioning reduces the cost and complexity of managing access for businesses with hundreds or thousands of employees but does not create or manage passwords. That’s up to each user. Enterprises must pair their IAM and user directories with a password manager app for directory integration to be efficient and secure.
