Packing Key

Purpose

The Packing Key is critical; it is your personally created encryption key that protects your data and is the key protection in our "zero-knowledge" model which guarantees that Passpack cannot view your sensitive information. Some key technical bits:

  • When the app requests your "Packing Key" it is really asking for your Packing Key Phrase. This phrase is used to encrypt your Account Encryption Material Keys.
  • Your Account Encryption Material Keys is a set of public and private key which is used to gain access to other key pieces of encrypted material in the Passpack application. This is like an individualized key to open a secure vault. Only one person, you, has these specific keys.
  • Your Packing Key Phrase is used to decrypt the Account Encryption Material Keys within the application. Passpack never sends any unencrypted Packing Key Phrase or Account Encryption Material Keys outside of the application - even within your organization.

Suggestions

  • We suggest using a phrase or sentence rather than just a single word because it's both strong and easy to remember. The longer, the better. Using spaces or punctuation is also a good idea.
  • Your Packing Key Phrase is case-sensitive and includes any spaces or punctuation.
  • When you set your Packing Key Phrase please note the Packing Key Strength Indicator, which indicates the relative strength of your Packing Key Phrase. Try to achieve a strength rating where all indicator bars appear green. Some strong examples are below:
    • I Like Formula1 Racing Cars
    • My first job as a twelve-year-old was cutting potatoes.
    • Who said Elvis had left the building?
